Okay, thus begins the new adventure of being a "blogger" replacing my former attempts to spam your inboxs with updates on my life and experiences. I'll admit that this is just a tease; I'm going to make a better post in a few days once I develop some film from a recent trip with my dad to New Hampshire (notice dad was included in the story thus it must be good!). For the first post, I figured I would just update you all on where I am right now in life, the universe, and everything (Douglas Adams allusion anyone?).
Meghan and I are still in Gainesville, FL right now. Meghan's working at Santa Fe High School as the band director, and I'm finishing up my M.A. in history at the university. We're currently house-sitting for two of my professors, which means living in a two-story, four bed, three bath, castle of a home with a pool. Needless to say, the living situation is great. I'm also working at Servants of Christ Anglican Church as the part-time youth minister, and this semester I actually got an appointment as a Teaching Assistant for the Department of History at UF. I'm teaching AMH 2010, "American History to 1877" which includes leading three discussion sections on Thursday morning and afternoon. It's been a great experience; I've really enjoyed it thus far, and it's another great thing to throw on the CV.
Jenni, Scott, Matt, Tracy, Grant, and others are all still here in Gainesville, which means that Meghan and I have a great group of friends that we hang with as much as possible. Recently we've taken to watching college football and then having a poolside barbecue at our house on weekends. We also play ultimate frisbee on Monday nights. It's nice to have that time of leisure each week with friends and family.
I'll post more later and continue to update you all on everything that happens in our lives. I hope the blog thing works and that you guys feel free to leave comments and let me know what's happening in your lives. That's the whole point, right? Hope to hear from you!

Yes, I am commenting on my own blog. Anyways, I forgot to mention that on the links at the side of the post there's one that goes to our Paris blog that we kept over the summer. If you want to read tales of our time in France, feel free to dig through that.
I'm a blog addict. Love it!
Also, American History to 1877 was one of my favorite classes in college. I bet you're knocking 'em dead!
As always, it's great to hear from you.
Meggie and Dan,
I just love blogs - fun to get the updates and also see what everyone else posts too. Great idea.
You two sound busy and I love that you entertain by your pool. Cool!
Love you both, Grandma
Good to hear from you and I think the blog way of doing it is great.
Must be nice living in that big house.
Congratulations of your teaching job.
Grandpa
glad to hear yall are doing great. going to try to make it down to JAX in a couple weekends for my annual "try to meet up with the Watkins but never do" trip.
E-beth, thanks for the encouragement. It has been really fun to finally teach, and I will say that it is only affirming my desires to become a professor. I'm also glad there's at least one blog addict out there (not including me).
g/g thanks for the blog support! It has been fun living in the new house, and it's certainly nice being able to entertain people (it was difficult in a one bedroom apartment like before). Love you guys.
Jones, I love the "meet up with Watkins but not really trip." How many years have we tried to make this happen and failed? I have no idea whether I'm making it to Jax -- most likely not. Hey, but if you want to swing over to Gainesville and stay the night on Saturday you're more than welcome to crash at our place. Both Meg and I would LOVE to see you (and if the Dogs win it would give you an opportunity to tease us IN Gainesville).
Can't wait to see the pics of Sam and the Allstars from the his glory days... maybe Sam will offer up a post of one of those "football injuries".
Looking forward to spending some time in the "palace" in November. Will we be staying in the Lincoln Bedroom?
So help me understand why the AMH class stops at 1877 and not 1876 (which seems like a typical milestone as our centennial year) or how about an even number like 1875 or 1850... maybe even 1900. 1877? What's that!!!!????
The new post should be up soon (hopefully by this weekend?). I got the pictures developed on Sunday. They're great.
Blair, as for your question: 1877 does seem like a random date, but in reality it actually makes a good bit of sense. The Civil War ended in 1865 and then what historians call the "Reconstructions period" lasted from 1865 until roughly 1877 when the "Compromise of 1877" was enacted which eventually brought Rutherford B. Hays into the presidency. So, basically you have to think of American History to 1877 as basically American history through the Civil War (and its immediate aftermath). The rest of the narrative picks up in the next course.
Can't wait for you guys to come visit. You'll have a room all to yourself!
i am gville jealous. i want to live in the same town as the watkins couple and the ulrich couple
i looked up flights to paris today...just seeing how much it costs when you dont go at, oh i dont know, the height of tourist season. not too shabby. (dont get me wrong, i mean the fireworks, watkins company, and nelly awesomeness made my july visit well well worth it)
bon jour,
katie
