The Gameplan

It's been a while since I dusted off this blog and created a new post. Here's the big news: I will be spending most of the 2011-2012 academic year living in Paris, France. It's a long story really, but it worked out so that I could spend the months from September through May in France doing research and writing my dissertation. The time in France will be invaluable for a variety of reasons -- perhaps the one about which I'm most excited is the chance to become fluent (or quasi-fluent) in French finally. That prospect excites me to no end, and I'm hopeful that by the end of my stay I'll look and sound like a young Gérard Depardieu (except slimer and more brunette). Or at the very least I'll come back sounding like this.

As for the blog, I'm going to try to use it once again to keep you all in touch with what's going on in my life. Hopefully I'll get the chance to do and see some cool things; I'm sure most of my posts will at least mention interesting books that I find. I may also post some videos, as I'm hoping to take some videos for the purpose of teaching in the future. I imagine I will post once or twice a week. We'll see how it goes once I get there.

The plan as of right now is as follows: I leave for Paris on August 31st. Joining me shortly after I arrive is my friend Joe, who is a graduate student in my department and who also needs to do research in Paris. Joe and I will be working alongside each other for a few weeks in Paris, and then we're going to take a week-long trip to Lyon, where we both plan to work with an important collection. A few weeks after that I plan to take a quick research trip to England as well; since I'll be in Paris, I thought it would be good to visit as many libraries and archives as I can. In the winter I may even try my hand at the Vatican Archives. Keep your fingers crossed. I will have my apartment in Paris until May 31st.

More details will come later. For now I thought I'd give you the basic scoop. If you'd like to stay in contact you can do one of a few things. First, you can always comment on the blog posts; blogs are often nice for that reason. Second, I will be on Skype and iChat pretty consistently every day. Remember that I'm on a 6-hour delay from EST, but hopefully you can catch me at some point. If you don't know my Skype or iChat names, just email me, and I'll give them to you. I will also have a landline phone that has free calls to other landlines in both France and the USA. Once again, email me if you want the number. Otherwise, I hope that I can stay in contact with you all. Fun things to follow, I promise.
